7) Make sure you get adequate coverage on items you already own
Don’t wait until you’re going on a trip to start thinking about getting travel insurance. If your camera or other electronics have been stolen, get a quote as soon as possible—most plans don’t cover items that are over 10 years old. If they do, they typically won’t give you enough money to replace them.
8) Determine if canceling is worth it
When you book your ticket, ask if you’re covered in case of an emergency that prevents you from traveling. If so, how much will it cost? A decent policy can cover up to $25,000 in expenses—but some only cover $1,000. Can you afford it?
